Your cosmetic consultation here is a real conversation. Dr. Fluegge looks at your teeth, listens to what is bothering you, and explains which treatments would actually address it. He will tell you honestly if a procedure is likely to give you the result you are picturing.

If you want to get a sense of what your smile could look like before committing, we can discuss that during the appointment. With some procedures, like bonding, Dr. Fluegge can even demonstrate directly on the tooth.

Cosmetic Procedures at Fluegge Dental
Teeth whitening with Zoom!
Our in-office whitening uses the Zoom! system. The appointment takes less than an hour. We apply a whitening gel to your teeth and activate it with a specially designed light, which breaks up surface and sub-surface stains that over-the-counter products cannot reach. Most patients see 6 to 8 shades of improvement in that single visit.
Zoom! whitening works on staining from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and natural aging of the enamel. It will not affect crowns, veneers, or fillings, since those materials do not respond to whitening agents. We will tell you this upfront before you decide to go ahead.
Dental veneers
Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front surface of a tooth. They change the tooth’s color, shape, and size in one procedure. Our patients use veneers to cover deep discoloration that whitening cannot fix, to close small gaps, to correct a chipped or worn tooth, or to make a tooth look more proportionate to its neighbors.
Placing veneers requires removing a small amount of enamel from the front of the tooth. That makes them a permanent decision. Dr. Fluegge is upfront about this at the consultation. Veneers typically last 10 to 20 years with good care, according to data from the American Dental Association.
Composite bonding
For bonding, Dr. Fluegge applies a tooth-colored composite resin directly to the tooth, shapes it by hand, and hardens it with a curing light. We use it to fix chips, close small gaps, build up a tooth that is shorter than its neighbors, or smooth a rough edge. The procedure does not require any removal of enamel in most cases.
Bonding costs less than veneers and is usually done in a single appointment. It is also less durable. A bonded restoration may last 5 to 10 years before it needs refreshing. We will be straight with you about what bonding can and cannot do for the specific issue you want to fix.
Esthetic recontouring
Recontouring removes a small amount of enamel to reshape a tooth. We use it to fix minor chips, smooth rough edges, slightly shorten a tooth that looks out of proportion, or reduce a pointed canine. Anesthetic usually is not needed, and the result is immediate. We often combine recontouring with bonding for a more complete result.
Tooth-colored fillings
If you have older amalgam fillings and want a more natural look, we replace them with composite resin fillings matched to the shade of your natural tooth. They will not stand out when you laugh or speak. Beyond appearance, composite resin bonds directly to the tooth structure, so we remove less healthy tooth material than a metal filling requires.
Porcelain crowns
A porcelain crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth. We place crowns when a tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a filling or bonding, but they also have cosmetic uses: correcting severe discoloration, reshaping a tooth that is too short or irregular, or capping a dental implant with a natural-looking restoration. For patients who cannot or do not want to come back for a second appointment, we offer CEREC same-day crowns fabricated right here at the practice.

How do I know which cosmetic procedure I actually need?
You find out during a consultation. Dr. Fluegge looks at your teeth and listens to what is specifically bothering you. He goes through each option, including what it does well and where it has limits. Most people come in wanting whiter teeth or to fix that one tooth without knowing the procedure names, and that is completely fine. The consultation is where we figure it out together.
Does cosmetic dentistry hurt?
It depends on the procedure. Whitening causes temporary sensitivity in some patients, typically for 24 to 48 hours after Zoom! treatment. Bonding usually needs no anesthetic. Placing veneers involves some enamel removal, and we use local anesthetic to keep that comfortable. Crowns require the same numbing as any crown preparation. How long do cosmetic dental results last?
Whitening results last 1 to 3 years depending on your diet and habits. Composite bonding typically lasts 5 to 10 years. Veneers last 10 to 20 years with good care, according to the American Dental Association. Porcelain crowns last 15 years or more in most cases. No cosmetic result is permanent, but good maintenance, regular cleanings, and avoiding habits like nail-biting or using teeth as tools extend the lifespan of any restoration.
Can I get teeth whitening if I have crowns or veneers?
Whitening agents do not affect crowns, veneers, or composite bonding. Those materials do not change color the way natural enamel does. If you whiten your natural teeth after you already have restorations, you may end up with a mismatch. We will flag this at your consultation if it is relevant to your situation.
